Dubai Shopping Festival and the Global Village: A shop, shop--win, win situation

One word that has become synonymous with Dubai is the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF). But there is another, much larger event, that encompasses DSF and provides much more than shopping deals. It is called Global Village. Global Village is a complete experience for the entire family. It is a ‘must visit’ for the staggering cultural extravaganza. For 19 seasons, Global Village has provided world class cultural and family entertainment, to millions of visitors who come to Dubailand. Guests are entertained with exclusive live performances, spectacular new rides, delicious international cuisines and authentic crafts and merchandise. While DSF runs for a month, first week of January to first week of February, Global Village is a six month affair, taking off in November and ending in April.

This season, 2015-16, which marked the 20th run of Global Village, was even bigger and better than previous editions, with an expanded line-up of attractions, concerts and entertainment. This year, 30-minute story telling sessions were conducted, to encourage reading among the youth, which targetted children between 3 to 10 years of age. It was based on the Arab art of story-telling in which a Hakawati (story-teller) read out stories to children. A reading corner was created, which included a make-shift library of nearly 1,000 books. Stepping into the Global village, one instinctively gets the feeling of how different each country is from the other but yet how similar we are as citizens of the world. An Indian feels just as much at home in the Russian or African pavilion as much as an American would in Turkey or Spain, such is the warmth displayed. In all, there were 32 pavilions representing more than 75 countries.

Some 150 activities and attractions were designed, tohighlight Dubai as an attractive destination for families, and as the region''''s most important hub, for homegrown and international brands. Among the most popular activities were the Market Outside the Box and Disney''''s Sparkling Frozen Forest (based on the popular film), the ''''Fashion Express''''. An in-mall ''''flash-mob'''', that took place at Ibn Battuta Mall and Dubai Festival City Mall, saw customers rushing to stores across both malls. Everything, from Yemeni honey to Spanish paella pans, Italian pasta to fresh fruit from Thailand, was on sale.

The icing on the cake came in the shape of the last couple of days, before the official closing of the Global Village. Maximum sales, at absolutely throw away prices, take place during these days. Prices are slashed to half, leaving both the seller and the buyer thrilled—the seller can dispose all many unsold items and the buyer saves a lot of money. Wooden hand-carved beautiful African masai couple statues, which were earlier sold for AED 800, were sold for AED 300, during these days. Pakistani leather sweat jackets, going at AED 300 earlier, could be bought at AED 50 to 100! These are just few of the examples. There are plenty more.

Every calendar year is kick-started by the DSF, in the first week of January, and runs for a month. The Dubai Shopping Festival began as a modest domestic affair, on February 16, 1996. DSF 2016 marked the 21st year of successfully showcasing a shopping experience beyond imagination, of irresistible deals and fantabulous promotions. Though the DSF winds up after a month (this year on the 1st of Feb 2016), the show still goes on in the Global Village. Shoppers who spent a few days in Dubai after DSF had the opportunity to win huge prizes, such as the Infiniti Mega Raffle and Nissan Grand Raffle, which remained valid until February 6. The Global Village closed on the 9th of April, 2016.

From 12 December 2015 to 09 April 2016, winners were drawn for raffle prizes worth AED 50,000, every Saturday. The results, announced on 09 April, reveal that many of the winners are, not surprisingly, Indians. nrizone congratulates them.
